The Hours
Meryl Streep is one of the best actresses I have ever watched. I have already seen a movie of her with Robert de Niro (Falling in Love, 1984), Al Pacino (Angels in America, 2003) and Denzel Washington (The Manchurian Candidate, 2004); so I thought how a movie with Nicole Kidmann can be?
I was not disappointed! The hours is about 3 women of 3 generations, each one has her own problems but all suffering from depression: 1291, Virginia Wolf, a writer who lives under the care of her family and the doctor, 1951, Laura Brawn, a pregnant housewife who is reading Virginia’s novel, and 2001, Clarissa Vaughn, a lesbian publisher who used to love Laura’s son, dying from AIDS.
My rate: 8/10
Some Quotes
Kitty: Oh, you’re reading a book?
Laura Brown: Yeah.
Kitty: What’s this one about?
Laura Brown: Oh, it’s about this woman who’s incredibly - well, she’s a hostess and she’s incredibly confident and she’s going to give a party. And, maybe because she’s confident, everyone thinks she’s fine… but she isn’t.
Angelica Bell: What happens to us when we die?
Virginia Woolf: …We return to the place we came from.
Angelica Bell: I don’t remember where I came from.
Virginia Woolf: Neither do I.
Julia: You can’t see that Louis Waters is weird?
Clarissa Vaughn: I can see that he’s sad.
Julia: All of your friends are sad, Mom.
