Chess French Kiss
Searching some Wikipedia entertainment, I found out a strange variation called “French Kiss”.
It consists of an unexpected pawn move at the second move:
1.e4 e6 2.a3
Usually, black plays 1… e6 in order to prepare 2… d5 and making tension on the center. White can either take the pawn (exchange varitation), block the center by Dutch defence (3. e5), keep the tension (Tarrasg variant : 3. Nd2, Rubinstein: 3.Nc3).
A variant to make it strategic is the Chigorin’s attack: 2.Qe2; next white may play c3, d3, Qc2, Nf3, Nbd2, etc.
As I wondered about that 2.a3, I asked an expert (Doctus Sapiens Sapiens), who answered me:
The french Kiss is one of those variations that could give white advantage only if black doesn’t play well. It could be useful especially vs players that learn chess openings theory and do not understand them very well (even if they are strong players).
That’s it! A surprising opening whose the intention is to make black feel lost.
In Wikipedia, the game proceeded as the following:
1. e4 e6 2. a3 d5 3. Nc3 d4 4. Na4 Bd7 5. c3 b5 6. Qe2 bxa4 7. cxd4 Nc6 8. e5 exd5 9. d4

Great website. I always liked the chess opening kings Indian. But as time passed I thought I’d explore more chess openings. I really enjoyed the chess book called Powerful Chess Opening Play by M, Hayward, found at www.chess-strategy.org . This neat book helped me develop my own personal chess opening system effectively and quickly. I’d recommend it.
