Ivan the Terrible
Ivan IV (August 25, 1530 – March 18, 1584) was the first ruler of Russia to assume the title of tsar. His long reign saw the conquest of Tartary and Siberia and subsequent transformation of Russia into a multiethnic and multiconfessional state.
Du to his exploits, Ivan was called Groznyj(Гро́зный) which was been wrongly translated “The terrible“, meaning the same thing as “awful“.
However, groznyj means “the Threatening” or “the Awesome”.
Irony of the fate, the city called after Ivan is Groznyj, capital of Chechenya! Groznyj is now, in fact, terrible, a terror caused by either the Russian army and the Chechenian “rebels”, and whose the victim is the innocent population.
Just another dirty war for the Holy petroleum.
