When bloggers play chess
Saturday I played an online chess match, I already played thousands of similar games, but the interesting fact is that it was against a Tunisian blogger, /etc/shadow. Honestly, I thought I was going to win the match within few moves, but he built a solid but passive defence and could liberate his pieces in spite of pressure and blocking. I had to sacrifice pawns to gain space for rooks.
Swobodin: Hey, you’re not bad!
/etc/shadow: merci pour le compliment

Swobodin - /etc/shadow :: Figure 1
However, /etc/shadow made a mistake, the fatal one.
1...Qxb1? 2. Rab1 Qxc3?? 3. Rfc1
Swobodin: Those pawns are not for free.
Swobodin: timeo Danaos et dona ferentes (Virgil)
Swobodin: “I fear the Greeks, even when they bring gifts.”
In fact, he has to sacrice his Queen to survive
3...Qxc1+ 4.Rxc1 Nxd4 5.Nb3
Swobodin: You give up?
/etc/shadow: Not yet
Probably due to exceed of self confidence, I haven’t seen the fork!
5...Ne2+ 6. Kf1 Nxc1
Black took the material advantage.
Some moves later …

Swobodin - /etc/shadow :: Figure 2
Swobodin: I only play for fun
/etc/shadow: You also win for fun
1.Qb7+ Kd7 2. Qc6+ Ke7 3. Bg5
Black king was forced to get back to the 8th row, and therefore to lose the rook and the knight …
Anyway, the match was quite funny and interesting. How about a bloggers’ chess tournament?
