Freeciv: ‘Caus civilization should be free!
I personally hate strategy games, and I never thought that I will pass 6 hours at night playing at a civilization-like game!
Freeciv is a turn-based, multi-player strategy game for the X Window System. The thing that attracted me is the realism; well I don’t mean the graphic, it’s poor, 2 D and small, but I liked the ideas. Your main objective is not to destroy other civilizations (although you should do it to win it), but first of all to keep your citizen happy. Thus you must improve your cities, provide enough food, build infrastructure, reduce corruption, make entertainments, establish justice, … Because once the citizen are angry or there’s a disorder in a city, your production process will slow, your units will be disbanded, famine will occur and they will incite for a Revolution!
Some of the realistic aspects are:
- You should build temples, cathedrals, … to keep your citizen happy, unless you are in a communist regime.
- You can bribe other ennemy units.
- Under a Democracy, military units make citizen unhappy; under despotism, however, you impose a martial law and nobody will claim unhappiness.
- Spy is represented by a strep-teaser. She can do missions that diplomats and militaries can’t “peacefully” in ennemy location: Investigate cities, poison the water, incite for a Revolution, …
- The more you produce, the more you pollute, which reduces the resources. That’s why you should recycle, build hydroplant stations, etc.
The reason for which I had curiosity to start the game, is when I saw the Tunisian flag, and the civilization is “Carthago”. Leaders are Hasdrubal, Hannibal and Dido; whereas default cities are Carthago, Leptis Magna, Cirta, Hadrumetum, Aspis, Charax, Sabrata, Utica, Capsa, …
It’s very easy to cheat: Just edit the save file and set whatever values you want; result: in 200 BC I already obtained nuclear weapon, fighters, bombarders, cruisers, … And I succeeded where Hannibal failed: I conquered Roma!
