Othman Empire: a dark epoch

I remember in school when teachers used to highlight Othman Empire’s “exploits”, and to incite us to be proud of Turkish Army, that was the strongest at the time, and that owned almost all the Arabic countries, and reached Wien.
However, history is not always full of glory, and has all the time cruel sides, that teachers were not able to tell us about: they were dreamers after all, who dream of Arabic and Muslim unity again.
Othman Empire is a shame, the worst epoch that we have ever known, they are killers, rapists, plunderers, … It’s not the cause that used to motivate them, but the glory, the gold, the women, the possession, the power, the control, and so on. In Tunisia, for example, the Turkish Beys have done nothing good for an illiterate, poor, disorganized population; instead, they used to steal them, to terrorize, to assassinate and to take their women off. Murad the third is an excellent example of the opportunism and thirst to blood and power. Few Tunisians know why a huge part of Djem’s amphitheater is destroyed. It’s not the time who did it: Roman edifices are eternal, but the Turkish! Due to poor harvest, the population was not able to pay the tax, so the Bey ordered his army to massacre them; as they did not find a better shelter than the Historical Monument, the army hit the theater with cannons, to show power and terror.
People say that those are French who are responsible of our problems, this is true, but French invested Tunisia when the country was so in late, so weak and so illiterate. and it’s the Bey who gave it to them and ordered his awesome army to not resist. French, at least, built infrastructure, even if they are 1000% profiteers; Turkish only built luxurious palaces, and mosques to entertain the population. Besides, I wonder why Tunisia has not changed the name of the city “Khaznadar”. Khaznadar was an hypocrite person who robbed the country wealth the most, and the city “Khaznadar” is called after his name, because he used to hide his fortune there!
Out of Tunisia, Othmans were not better: they lead the part of Europe that they occupied to the darkness and the weakness, using a segregative system against the non-Muslims, robbed them and emptied the countries from their wealth: Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Albania … are not the most developed European countries today. The Austrian “Glory” is a scandal: Loss in Othman Army are more than losses in Austrian (and allies) Army combined with the Austrian population. Let’s not forget the horrible genocide against Armenians in the beginning of the XXth century, for they are Christian and they supported Russia in the Great War.
Unlike many nostalgics, I see Atatürk as a liberator, he saved the world from the most cruel empire of evil that has ever existed, worse than Vandals and equal to the third Reich. Yes, he oppressed Kurdish and other minorities, but he was an openminded leader who enlightened the way to Turkey and to other Arab countries.

I agree with you totally Othman empire wasn’t as good as historian want us to believe

Well, I remember my history teacher in primary school some 20 years ago describing Khaznadar as a shame to Tunisian History. Late Beys became a lot more patriotic than their savage ancestors.

After all, it’s Keireddine Basha who pioneered the first Constitution in the Arab World (1857, see http://www.archives.nat.tn/pdf_doc/950802.PDF), that predates the US Constitution. Ali Bash Hamba was active in the national liberation mouvement and Moncef Bey had an exemplar position in WW2 as he opposed the deportation of Tunisian Jews, opposed the pro-Nazi Vichy government and was forced and died in exile for that.

Obviously, this does not cover up for centuries of barbarism and cruelty. My father used to tell me an anecdote about Turkish soldiers: “When a Turkish soldier stumbles in a rock, he would pull his pistol and shoot at it out of anger!”.

Thanks Imed; yes, these facts can not compensate the generations of darkness. Kheireddin (he was Caucasian) did not succeed with the Destur and “era of serenity”, since the “man with donkey’s” Revolution has made everything fall.
Moncef Bey has also done what he had to do, but nothing more: he did not fight with nationalists, neither officially declared resistance against France.
I don’t know about the Othman soldier attitude, but the decapitated Armenian woman who was taking her baby and trying to run away does…
