Too Cool for Internet Explorer

Is Nvu dead?

Nvu IconNvu is a powerful WYSIWYG HTML and XHTML editor. I exclusively use this program when designing web pages for it’s reliable, has many features, supports CSS and generates valid code, let’s not mention it’s free!
However, it has been exactly one year since the last release of Nvu, 1.0 in June 22nd, 2005; no update, no security fix, no extension from that time! It was amazing the quick development and releases since its 0.5 version, within one month and some days, a new version was released…
Well, we can say that Nvu is a complete editor, but comparing with Dreamweaver, there’s still too much effort to do.
I personally don’t like Dreamweaver: Aside from being very expensive and non-multiplatform, it’s slow (uses too much memory), generates bad attributes not recognized by W3C, but also bad PHP code, insecure and deprecated.
What I wish to see in Nvu is:

  • More PHP code support. (The actual is just basic)
  • Database connection.
  • Auto-completion for tags and relationship HTML/CSS.
  • CSS 3 support.
  • Easy shortcuts customization.
  • More extensions! Although it’s Gecko-like and supports xpi extensions, those are not as available as Firefox, Thunderbird and SeaMonkey.
  • Files management support, well, it already exists, but it doesn’t affect related files.

The project is sponsored by Linspire though, and it’s strange what happened to Nvu when it has been in its top; now, only forums are active; can we say that the project has died? It was not an agony, but a suddent heart attack…

I can’t seem to get Nvu to import an existing website. It also doesn’t appear to have very good support for subdirectories and keeping all of the internal links pointed to the right place.

Also, the template functionality is pretty limited.

I agree that Dreamweaver is way to slow and resource-intensive, But it does have pretty good template support.

Well, regarding templates, you can enhance your libraries; there are thousands of free templates in the Web that you may add to your library.
Yes, the subdirectory support is very poor, I thought it would be improved…
As for DreamWeaver, I won’t install “the” other OS for it ;-) .

I believe is dead… I run nvu on OS X and it is slow and some annoying bugs like not connecting to ftp servers without retrying ten times… but I found it very useful anyhow and I stick to it.
