The “other” September 11th that cannot be forgotten
On September 11 1973, the General Augusto Pinochet Ugarte led a military coup against Salvador Allende’s goverment, striking the presidential palace, and starting a mass of tortures. Victims are intellectuals, artists, Allende’s supporters, … Salvador suicided, letting Pinochet establish one of the most cruel and the most bloody dictatorships in the history of humanity. One of the thousands of victims that passed under the dictator’s repression is the popular singer Víctor Jara, who was brutally tortured and assassinated.
On October 1973, at least 70 persons were murdered by the Caravan of Death. At least a thousand people were executed during the first six months of Pinochet in office, and at least two thousand more were killed during the next sixteen years, as reported by the Valech Report. Some 30,000 were forced to flee the country. A new Constitution was approved by plebiscite characterized by the absence of registration lists, on September 11, 1980, and General Pinochet became President of the Republic for an 8-year term.

Pinochet left the presidency on March 11, 1990 and transferred power to Patricio Aylwin, the new democratically elected president. He is still alive, protected by his senatorship and immunity.
