Thailand, the middle-age governing kingdom

I once asked a Thai friend about their king and they way he is ruling, the answer was “we all love our king”. I tried to be logical and explain that he holds the fortune of the kingdom while millions live in poverty and are obliged to prostitute, she told me “yes, but he is doing his best to reduce that”, well, if he were doing his best, he would donate the whole or a part of his fortune to social projects, why did not he do that? She said “I don’t know, but he loves Thai people, and we all love him”.
Very convincing, it’s only today that I learned the reason of this “love” between his Majesty and the people.

A 57-year-old Swiss man has pleaded guilty in a court in Thailand to charges of insulting the king.
(…)
He is due to be sentenced later this month, and the maximum penalty he could face is 75 years in jail.
Jufer’s lawyer said the minimum sentence he faced was seven-and-a-half years.

I am still shocked. How comes that in the XXI st century people are condemned for such a so called crime? Is it a way to progress?
Will Mr. Bush help the Thai people to get freedom, democracy and stability?

I’ve just read it ! Yes, such a ruler exists and it is nearer than you can’t imagine !

I think you should make more effort in order to understand the situation and not judge it till you capture the reality of that country.
The king is the first one to be against such laws. Besides he is not a dictator and doesn’t rule the country. His effort to improve the Thai situation are tremendous.
    I love him too !

If I were his Majesty and such a scandal happened, I would make something to avoid a diplomatic incident with Switzerland and to keep the image of a tolerant and smiling Thailand. I just think he does not care at all.

  4. kaiser Says:

Switzerland may influence, that’s right !

But who cares as tourists from United States (who’s most of them could not situate geographically the Helevetic Conf.), Australia, France, Sweden continue to crow beaches and hotels each year ?

For your last question : will mister Bush help Thai get freedom ?
I choose the answer No, with 20,000 dinars and the car
    وآخر قرار

Swobodin, even if he cared and it seems that he does because he questioned the law that put him above criticism, he cannot do anything because he has very limited power by the constitution. All what he has is popular backing but he is not in the chain of decision making. The government is to blame in this case or to be more precise, the laws that would make the acts of a drunk swiss who is not even a tourist get him 75 years in jail because he threw paint at the king poster!!!
