Activism in Czech Republic 2: Communists are back?
I am following the demonstrations held in Czech Republic and especially in Brno regarding the protestation against the American missile base in Czech Republic, I think the best event was Prague’s one on March 17th.
After that, there was a small demonstration in Brno in the main square (Náměstí Svobody) but it was not that serious, as it was animated by young people disguising into clowns. Certainly it was attractive, but not politically pertinent, especially with the Spanish junk music worshiping sex and marijuana. Anyway, they broke the routine of the square that day.
Yesterday (well, 2 days before), I was surprised to see a communist demonstration! I did not know that communists were active in Czech Republic, as they have a very bad history (1968 events) and a bad reputation, all my Czech friends told they were hostile to communism, which, according to many testimonies, aside from the political oppression and freedom limitation, destructed the economy of Czechoslovakia.
Communists protested as well in Náměstí Svobody, most of participants were old aged (nostalgic?) people, but there also some young “revolutionary style” persons, the demonstration was held few meters close to McDonald’s , coincidence or intentional? The topic was the same, protestation against the “occupation” of Czech Republic by United States. Definitely, the Soviet occupation was enough to Czech people.
Next event: May 7th in Moravské Náměstí, I am not sure if I would be able to attend it.

don’t get mistaken, there’s a LOT ppl who live in nostalgia for communist regime. there was no unemployement, ppl were screwing at work constatnly, and if you didn’t mind queing for everything, no freedom of speech and press, and no travelling abroad, you might have been quite happy and have an easy life with lot of free time
there are regions, where communists still play a major role in local politics, especially northern bohemia and silesia. but even in south moravia, e.g. znojmo - nearly 20% votes.
but the truth is, that generally, their voters are mostly over 50 years old. in the group 18-25 they have less than 4% of followers

Hey,
It is quite sad how it is with comunists in our country:(
We have law, where are on the same level fascism and comunism, it is not allowed to propagate any of the simbols of these ideology. But no one care about this law, even biggies comunist party in czech republic promoting cominism in its name and leader of the same party is connecting they party with the one in the second 50year of the 20th century, with all crimes.
It is almost to start crying. If I’ll stop somewhere and agree what hitler did, I’ll be arrested. But if I’ll say it about Gotwald (czech leader of comunistic party) nothing will happend, why?
It is sick here…
